Freelance Editor / Proofreader

Freelance Editor / Proofreader manages written texts through the publishing production process. You will be responsible for assessing the quality of work through editing and proofreading and ensuring that the Publisher’s house style is adhered to in all published work. The Freelance Editor / Proofreader is also responsible for working on editing to ensure that the text’s overall presentation and its elements (e.g., tables and figures) meet the style and quality requirements. The Freelance Editor / Proofreader manages the quality of papers and production schedule from acceptance to print and online deliveries and monitors page usage and other journal metrics.

Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a portfolio of journal titles, ensuring that they run on optimised workflows and meet department publication metrics.
  • Maintain article and issue schedules, metadata, and page budgets, and uphold quality standards throughout the publication process.
  • Complete production checks by assessing the production quality of incoming manuscripts; ensure that all relevant files are received and that they follow established guidelines.
  • Review copyedited materials to ensure that they follow the Publishers’ style guidelines and ensure that the author’s corrections have been properly implemented.
  • Offer constructive support and guidance to assigned vendor project managers.
  • Provide excellent customer service for assigned Editors-in-Chief, authors, internal departments, and external vendors and customers.
  • Assist and lead department projects as required.

Qualification and Competencies:

  • A Bachelor’s or N.dip in any Applied Languages or Journalism.
  • 2-4 years of relevant editorial/publishing experience.
  • A demonstrated proficiency in the English language and an interest in scholarly publishing are essential.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Specialise in at least one African language (Sepedi will be an added advantage)
  • Strong English skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Attention to detail and critical thinking
  • Being well-organised and able to manage short deadlines

Language Researcher

We are searching for a detail-oriented Linguist/Language Practice to join our team. The linguist’s responsibilities include completing all tasks allocated by the client, which may include completing interpretations of spoken and written language, analysing texts, audio, and visual recordings, as well as conducting research and interviews. They must know the S’pitori language and their English must be fluent deliver presentations if required.

To be successful as a Linguist, you should have keen observational powers and be acutely aware of how language and culture intersect. Outstanding candidates understand how language is affected by culture, race, religion, and economic factors, and they are also able to identify patterns and process data. If this is you, then you will be able to join our at Zamaphuti Publishers, based in Pretoria.

Minimum requirements:

  • Linguist/Language Practice essential
  • Minimum 0 – 2 years’ relevant experience in the Linguistic field required
  • Experience and knowledge of the Pitori & English language essential
  • Microsoft/Computer experience required

 

Responsibilities:

  • Understanding job or client specifications and completing all language translations, interpretations, analyses, and research accordingly.
  • Transcribing English language to S’pitori language.
  • Identifying and making sense of language patterns.
  • Completing accurate transcriptions of audio recordings and tabulating data.
  • Analysing documents and texts and translating complex information into simple language.
  • Studying languages, cultures, and societies in order to draft national and school language policies.
  • Collaborating with other Linguists and discovering and documenting the origins of words and the authenticity of texts.
  • Providing translation and interpretation services to the government, military, and other private and public sectors.
  • Keeping abreast of new research and developments that influence language.
  • Attending conferences, lectures, and workshops to expand your skillset and professional networks.

Linguist Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in linguistics, or a related.
  • Additional language courses are recommended.
  • Proficiency in two or more languages.
  • Practical experience with translation and transcription, as well as MS Office.
  • Superb language fluency.
  • Excellent organisation, communication, and active listening skills.
  • A passion for language and lifelong learning.
